Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology

Oral Medicine deals with the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region, and with their diagnosis and non-surgical management. Oral Medicine relates dentistry to medicine.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (also termed oral pathology) refers to the diseases of the mouth, jaws and structures such as salivary glands, temporomandibular joints; facial muscles. The mouth is an important organ with many different functions. It is also prone to a variety of medical and dental disorders.

A radiographic image is formed by X-rays, which penetrates oral structures at different levels, depending on various anatomical densities, before striking the film or sensor. Teeth appear lighter because less radiation penetrates them to reach the film. Dental caries, infections and bone appear darker because X-rays readily penetrate these less dense structures
