Periodontology and Restorative Dentistry

Periodontology is the study of supporting structures of teeth and maintains their position in the jaw. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. The inflammation of gingiva is called gingivitis which further develops into periodontitis, which causes mobility of teeth.

Restorative Dentistry is often called as ‘Oral Rehabilitation’ due to the increasing need for special care of teeth. It is the study, diagnosis and management of teeth and supportive structures which are helpful in masticatory and aesthetics of the individual.
